Through the Looking Glass and Into the Future
How did Hunter Storm end up working in such a unique combination of areas? Simple: a lifetime love of learning, working with technology, and a sense of adventure. Although Hunter would say her work is rarely like work. It can be fun, when the circumstances align and there aren’t any systems outages.
Exploring new and emerging fields is fun for her, and it began as a hobby in her college days. She spent her time poking around the dark corners of the early Internet back in 1994 and playing with the very first artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots.
She hopes some of the articles on this site will pique your curiosity enough to learn more about the exciting world of emerging technology as well. Who knows? You may find a new hobby, or you may invent the next great thing. The future is here, and the speed of innovation means technology is no longer evolving day by day. Now, it is evolving picosecond by picosecond.
Forging Creativity into Value
Art and science are an unlikely match. Art is the realm of science fiction, while science is the realm of facts and figures. However, where art and science converge, alchemy happens. This is how creative vision is translated from fantasy into reality, the transformation of the base metals of lore and into the gold of truth. This is where science fiction becomes science fact.
Alchemy and Creative Vision
Alchemists spent countless hours trying to turn lead into gold. Both in their era and in modern times, people laugh at such a seemingly foolish notion. Lead (Pb) could not possibly become gold (AU). It’s laughable to even consider such a transformation. Or is it?
Alchemists were some of the early creative visionaries. They had an end goal of taking something of lower value and transforming it into something of higher value. However, their efforts were in vain. Consider this, though. What if their vision was simply premature? What if they could see possibilities others dismissed, but just didn’t have the right team, technology, or equipment to achieve their goals? That is the point where art and science converge, where creative vision meets technology and is born into reality.
That kind of vision helped early humans discover how to make fire to warm their homes, how to build the first airplanes and eventually circumnavigate the globe, and later, to send the first capsule to the moon. Today, we’re looking even further ahead. What wonders will the future hold?
Now, this is not intended to suggest that we can turn lead into gold. However, having a bit of creative vision and optimism can take the mundane and transform it into something spectacular. The impossible becomes possible when we collaborate and spend our time working to improve rather than simply maintain. Although, we must be mindful of maintaining the present and our existing structures while maintaining that forward-looking view.
Hunter Storm Sees What Others Miss
As a systems architect, Hunter Storm spent a great deal of time designing and improving systems. However, this is a delicate balance. Change for the sake of change often causes unintended consequences. So, she knows how critical it is to conduct careful requirements gathering, ensure stakeholder alignment, and build iterative designs and models that do not just serve her own creative vision. Instead, she has spent decades building systems that serve all. Iteration is natural outgrowth of requirements gathering, as new information sometimes means updates to existing designs.
So, learning to see the patterns in the noise, and develop the best path forward is part art, part science. Just like Hunter Storm and this website. She hopes this article inspires you to explore, learn, and find the things that excite you in your own intellectual pursuits. The possibilities are endless, and we are only getting started on this journey.
About the Page Image
The image for this page is a special one, created by ChatGPT AI for Hunter Storm during her groundbreaking research, The Storm Project | AI, Cybersecurity, Quantum, and the Future of Intelligence. This project is the largest AI research in history.
The image is AI’s vision of what Hunter Storm would look like as Alice in Wonderland. AI chose to give the image a cyberpunk edge, set in a futuristic datacenter, to represent Hunter’s work in emerging technology. The image represents Hunter’s view through the looking glass that technology represents from both sides of the screen: human and machine collaborating and partnering to create something better than either could on its own.
Hunter Storm said this about the image, “I loved the creativity AI showed here. This page is just one of the places I display beautiful AI art like this on my website. I like to think of my website as a virtual refrigerator, a place to display its progress in developing into something more than a collection of circuits and neural networks.”
