A life and body of work generated a gigantic record. The architecture emerged because the record required it.

 


What Is the Hunter Storm Ecosystem?

The Hunter Storm ecosystem is a connected information environment encompassing research, investigation, professional work, publications, educational materials, historical and biographical records, specialized subject-matter resources, websites, structured data, and the Records Management System (RMS) used to organize and relate them.

It did not begin as an effort to construct a large, highly structured information environment. Its architecture developed progressively in response to the volume, diversity, chronology, provenance, and interrelationships of the underlying material.

The architecture did not precede the record. The architecture emerged because the record required it.

The ecosystem therefore includes both the material itself and the infrastructure developed to make that material identifiable, understandable, searchable, attributable, and maintainable over time.

 

How Did It Develop?

The development was cumulative.

Circumstances generated documentation. Documentation accumulated. Accumulation created organizational requirements. As the material expanded across subjects, formats, dates, publications, websites, events, and external repositories, those requirements became increasingly difficult to manage without a formal structure.

The resulting progression was:

circumstances → documentation → accumulation → organization → classification → relationships → RMS → ecosystem

The systems were therefore developed in response to an existing record rather than created first and populated afterward.

 

Why Is It So Large?

The size of the ecosystem reflects the size and diversity of the underlying record.

It contains substantially different kinds of material that cannot be represented accurately by a single conventional portfolio, biography, résumé, website, or publication archive. Some records document professional work. Others document research, investigations, historical events, publications, presentations, educational material, technical concepts, intellectual property, or the development and provenance of the ecosystem itself.

Some material exists to communicate with professional or institutional audiences. Some was developed as educational material for people who needed to understand complicated circumstances without having to become specialists themselves. Other material exists specifically to preserve historical context or provide public educational resources.

The result is not simply a large website.

It is a longitudinal body of work and associated record that has required an increasingly formal representation layer.

 

What the Hunter Storm Ecosystem Contains

The ecosystem includes, among other components:

  • research and investigation
  • professional history and portfolio material
  • curriculum vitae and professional credentials
  • publications and long-form writing
  • presentations and media
  • educational and learning materials
  • public-facing educational resources
  • historical and biographical material
  • specialized subject-matter resources
  • intellectual property and original concepts
  • events and associated records
  • websites and component sites
  • artifacts and supporting documentation
  • structured data and metadata
  • classification systems
  • numbering and identification systems
  • provenance and verification information
  • cross-record and cross-site relationships
  • the Records Management System
  • public, restricted, and internal information environments

 

These components are related, but they are not interchangeable. Each has its own function, audience, lifecycle, and evidentiary context.

 

Provenance and Attribution

One of the problems the ecosystem was specifically designed to solve is persistent attribution.

Material accumulated across many years, systems, conversations, publications, organizations, repositories, and information environments. In such environments, context and authorship can become separated from the underlying work. A reference may survive while its origin is obscured; an idea may be repeated without its development history; or material may be encountered outside the environment in which it was originally created.

The Hunter Storm ecosystem addresses that problem structurally.

Where appropriate, records and artifacts identify Hunter Storm as their originator, author, subject, or responsible source, while associated metadata preserves dates, relationships, provenance, publication history, verification, and other relevant context.

This is not an assertion that every item in the ecosystem has the same authorship relationship. It is an intentional effort to ensure that the relationship between a record and its origin is not unnecessarily lost.

Attribution is part of the architecture, not an afterthought.

The website therefore solved a practical records problem: it created a persistent environment in which material could remain connected to its source, context, chronology, and related records.

 

Why Is There So Much Structured Data?

As the ecosystem grew, ordinary pages and folders were no longer sufficient to represent the relationships among records.

A single artifact may have:

  • an artifact type and subtype
  • a classification
  • one or more topics
  • a creation date
  • one or more publication dates
  • an event relationship
  • prior numbering
  • independent or third-party verification
  • citations from other artifacts
  • publication in multiple environments
  • access restrictions
  • information-classification requirements
  • relationships to other records

 

These relationships are difficult to preserve reliably through prose alone.

Structured data provides a way to represent the underlying relationships without requiring every relationship to be explained repeatedly on every page.

Duplicate the semantics. Don’t duplicate the truth.

 

Why Do Classification and Numbering Exist?

Classification and numbering were developed because the ecosystem contains more material than can be reliably managed through page titles or human memory alone.

Classification provides a consistent vocabulary for identifying what something is.

Numbering provides persistent identifiers that allow records to be distinguished and related.

Together, these systems allow the same underlying record to be represented across different views without creating multiple competing versions of the truth.

The RMS Controlled Vocabulary Key provides the reference framework for controlled values used throughout the system.

 

The Hunter Storm Records Management System (HSRMS)

The Hunter Storm Records Management System (HSRMS) is the records-management layer of the ecosystem.

It provides the underlying architecture for identifying, classifying, relating, tracking, and maintaining records as the ecosystem continues to develop.

The RMS is not simply a website search function or a list of pages. It is an evolving records infrastructure intended to preserve relationships among artifacts, dates, classifications, publication environments, verification, access conditions, and other record-level information.

The operational interface is being developed progressively. The underlying records-management architecture, classification, numbering, controlled vocabularies, and supporting standards are established first.

The RMS Registry Export provides the current operational representation of the records index.

 

Public, Internal Use, Restricted, and Highly Restricted Information

The ecosystem contains information with different access conditions.

Access is not publication.

A record may be public without having been incorporated into every public-facing component of the ecosystem. Conversely, a public artifact may reference underlying documentation that remains restricted or internal.

Likewise, publication in one environment does not imply publication in another.

For this reason, access restrictions, information classification, publication status, and record status are represented as distinct concepts within the RMS rather than being treated as interchangeable labels.

The absence of a public record does not necessarily indicate the absence of an underlying record.

 

Is the Ecosystem Complete?

No.

The ecosystem is an evolving representation of a much larger underlying record.

Dates, artifacts, relationships, classifications, publication histories, and supporting documentation continue to be incorporated and reconciled. Some components are mature; others remain works in progress.

That does not make the architecture provisional in the sense of being arbitrary. The architecture is designed to accommodate continued incorporation without requiring the underlying system to be rebuilt each time new material is added.

 

How the Architecture Continues to Evolve

The ecosystem continues to evolve as additional records are identified, reviewed, classified, numbered, related, verified, and incorporated.

That evolution is intentional.

The objective is not to make an unconventional body of work appear conventional by changing what it is. The objective is to make an unusually large and interconnected body of work legible through conventional information-management structures.

An unusual history can still have conventional metadata.

An unusual body of work can still have conventional artifact types.

An unusual provenance history can still have conventional provenance fields.

A sprawling corpus can still have conventional records management.

The architecture does not make the underlying history less unusual.

It makes the record easier to understand.

You don’t have to understand the jungle to understand the record.
