Hunter Storm Information Classification Taxonomy

The Data Classification Taxonomy provides the classification vocabulary used to describe information and records within the Hunter Storm corpus.

It operates independently of the Hunter Storm Numbering System (HSCNS).

HSCNS identifies a record. Data Classification Taxonomy describes the information represented by that record.

Why a Separate Classification Taxonomy Exists

A universal numbering system answers the question:

Which record is this?

A data classification taxonomy answers a different question:

What kind of information is this, and how should it be described or handled?

Keeping those functions separate allows a single HSCNS identifier to remain stable even when the record’s classification, relationships, or access status changes.

Artifact-Type Vocabulary

The data taxonomy includes defined artifact and record types used throughout the corpus.

Current established artifact types include:

Code Type Operational meaning
BRF Briefing Material prepared to convey information, findings, status, or context to an audience
DCT Doctrine A defined body of principles or established approach governing action or practice
FRM Framework A structured model used to organize concepts, processes, relationships, or decision-making
GOV Governance Material defining organizational authority, oversight, accountability, or control
IND Index A structured finding aid or navigational record used to locate or relate other records
LEG Legal Material concerning law, legal proceedings, legal authority, or legal analysis
MKT Marketing Material created primarily for promotional, audience-development, or commercial communication purposes
MED Media Audio, video, photographic, graphic, or other media content
POL Policy A defined rule, requirement, or organizational position governing conduct or operation
PRN Principles A stated set of foundational concepts or rules
PUB Publication Material intentionally published or released as a public work
RPT Report A structured presentation of observations, findings, analysis, or results
STA Site Structural Artifact A record representing a structural component of the HunterStorm.com/site ecosystem
STD Standards A defined technical, procedural, professional, or external standard
STM Statement A formal or substantive expression of position, fact, observation, or conclusion
STO Store Material associated with a product, merchandise, storefront, or commercial catalog function

These definitions are operational definitions for the Hunter Storm corpus. They are not necessarily identical to the meaning assigned to the same words by another organization.

Multiple Classifications

A single HSCNS record may carry multiple data classifications where appropriate. Classification does not replace the underlying record identity.

For example, a published document may simultaneously have characteristics of a publication, report, framework, or other defined type. The classifications describe the record; the HSCNS identifier continues to identify it.

Classification Versus Access

Classification should not be confused with access control.

A record can be classified as an artifact type while separately being designated:

  • public;
  • restricted;
  • private; or
  • otherwise access-controlled.

Likewise, a record’s classification does not by itself establish that its contents should be publicly disclosed.

Classification Is Descriptive

The purpose of the data taxonomy is to make the corpus searchable, understandable, and consistently described.

Classification is therefore descriptive and structural unless a particular classification explicitly represents a documented conclusion.

Where terminology has a specialized meaning within another authoritative system, that meaning is documented separately rather than silently imported into the data taxonomy vocabulary.
