Hunter Storm KISS (HSKISS) Definition and Origin

HSKISS: Definition and Origin

Definition

HSKISS stands for Hunter Storm Keep It Simple Search. It is the informal nickname and guiding philosophy associated with Hunter Storm Search (HSS), the search and discovery capability for the Hunter Storm knowledge ecosystem.

The name combines the Hunter Storm (HS) naming convention with a playful variation on the familiar KISS principle: Keep It Simple, Stupid.

In HSKISS, the emphasis is on making information discovery straightforward for the person using it, even when the underlying systems and information architecture are complex.

Origin

HSKISS emerged during the development of Hunter Storm Search as the Hunter Storm knowledge ecosystem expanded across research, publications, systems, records, and other resources.

The concept reflects a practical need: people should be able to find relevant information without first learning how the underlying ecosystem is organized.

The name is a deliberate play on the KISS principle and the Hunter Storm naming convention. It also serves as a lighthearted Easter egg—a small touch of humor attached to a serious design objective.

The Philosophy

HSKISS follows a simple principle:

Keep the experience simple. Put complexity to work behind the interface.

This means designing search and discovery around the needs of the person using the system rather than requiring people to adapt to unnecessary technical or organizational complexity.

The philosophy supports several objectives:

  • Simplicity: Make basic information discovery intuitive for first-time visitors.
  • Progressive complexity: Make advanced capabilities available when useful without overwhelming the basic experience.
  • Accessibility: Reduce unnecessary barriers to finding and navigating information.
  • Transparency: Make search capabilities and limitations understandable.
  • Security: Build the protections necessary for safe operation into the underlying implementation.
  • Human agency: Help people find information and evaluate it independently rather than dictate what they should conclude.

Simplicity does not mean eliminating necessary complexity. It means managing complexity so it serves a clear purpose.

Relationship to Hunter Storm Search

Hunter Storm Search (HSS) is the system. HSKISS is its informal nickname and associated design philosophy.

HSKISS is not a separate application, technical system, or search engine. It describes the user-experience principle guiding the development of HSS.

As HSS evolves, the philosophy remains a useful design test:

Does this feature help people find and use information, or does it merely make the interface more complicated?

Guiding Principle

Simple for the user. Sophisticated under the hood. Secure by design.

Find the knowledge. Navigate the complexity. Preserve human agency.
