Remember We Are Friends | There is Unity in Variety
Scenes from a Memory, Part III: Let’s travel back in time to the good old days when we remembered that we were friends because of all the things we have in common, instead of focusing on all the ways we are different. You know, when we knew we had unity in variety and found common ground instead of irreconcilable differences.
Love is the Answer
The people in my Facebook are an extremely diverse group, and I love that. You will find unity in variety within every group of people represented here, and I love and respect something about all of you.
Since you love me in return for whatever reason, please take the time to find out what I see in that person you disagree with. Chances are, if I like them, you will, too. They are probably a good human being who just happens to look, talk, or be in some other way different from you. If you do, you might find that you just made a new and awesome friend.
What Did You Say?
Shocker, but I don’t agree with all of what any of you say. However, I agree with some of what you say, and I’m certain that goes both ways. That doesn’t matter because I see something special in each of you, and I hope you’ll take the time to see that special thing in one another. I have lost too many close friends and family to death, and you nearly lost me in December 2017. Don’t make me lose you to a frivolous difference of opinion.
Sticks and Stones
Remember that old children’s rhyme, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words shall never hurt me.” Even if someone is deliberately trying to be hurtful, ignore them. Don’t let them goad you into behaving like them, and you will continue to look good. They will be the ones covered in the metaphorical mud they were trying to sling on you.
Motive of the Message
Don’t let a word you don’t like cause you to dislike an entire person. If I did that, I’d never speak to anyone ever again. In other words, none of us is perfect. Let people be people, no matter how they speak or what words they choose. Everyone’s vocabulary and cultural lens is different. Learn the difference between ignorance and intentional slights.
No Haters
More sternly phrased, I will not tolerate hatred, disrespect, or any other negative behavior on my social media pages. Unity in variety is a personal credo I’ve lived by for my entire life, and I’m not going to allow anyone to change that. Nothing I write or Like is ever hateful or degrading to anyone, so never misconstrue my meaning or twist my words. Thank you for taking the same approach and meeting me in the middle with mutual respect for everyone here.
My House, My Rules
My pages are my house and my rules. You can say whatever you want on your own page. At my house you will be well-fed, given tasty beverages and sweet desserts, and you will be wrapped up in a cuddly blanket if you fall asleep on my couch afterwards.
However, you will keep your feet off my metaphorical coffee table, and you will speak to my family, friends, and me with respect or you will find yourself leaving my house and possibly leaving it with help from others. I will not judge what you write, and I do not have to read it. Feel free to follow suit whichever way you choose.
Mind Your Own Business and Be Happier for It
There is a song my Dad used to play. I disliked it when I was a child, but as an adult, the lyrics really speak to me. It is Hank Williams, “Mind Your Own Business.” Wise words from a country sage. If you like this brand of pithy sayings, you may enjoy my Quotes page.
The Best of Times
Anyway, life is short, and so I am! As a wise friend always says, “We’re not here for a long time, just a good time.” So, let’s make this the best time we can.
