Facing haters? It’s a rite of passage in our world. Whether it’s online trolls or off-key critics, here’s how I turn their negativity into success fuel for my creativity. Join me as I share practical tips and a humorous take on handling these bumps in the road.

I first wrote the contents of this post in response to a post from someone who was upset after a troll attacked their musical work. Many of us deal with this kind of hateful nonsense. I thought I’d polish and post my response here in hopes it might help one of you someday.

As a performing artist, rock singer, and athlete, I’ve experienced my share of unsupportive behavior, jealousy, and hate. These challenges are part of the journey when you’re pushing boundaries and pursuing your passion. Whether on stage or in the arena, navigating criticism and negativity comes with the territory. However, I’ve learned to channel these experiences into motivation, fueling my desire to excel and prove my critics wrong. It’s through perseverance and a steadfast focus on my goals that I’ve been able to rise above adversity and continue to thrive in my creative and athletic pursuits.

 

Ignore the Haters and Keep Moving Forward

First and foremost, ignore the jerk who made some foolish comment. Keep doing what you do best. That person was probably trying to sidetrack you because they’re afraid you are better than them. They’re right…you ARE better than them!

Make sure each of your accomplishments surpasses the previous one. Move on, and forget the hater even exists. Never let a human speed bump become a human brick wall. My credo is: “Oh, so that upset you? Just wait and see what comes next.”

 

Humor as a Shield | Turning Negativity into Positivity

Ever used “Word Jitsu” on a hater? It’s my secret weapon, twisting their negativity into a positive, leaving them speechless. To use this tactic, deliberately misinterpret their intended negative dig as a positive and thank them for it. This effectively disarms the passive-aggressive and/or aggressive person. It makes me giggle every time I use my “Word Jitsu” skills to thwart the attack. Let’s keep rocking and rolling, leaving the naysayers in awe of our resilience and spirit!

 

Keep Pushing Forward

Now, go make some music, write that book, apply for that job, or ask your crush out! You’ve got this!

 

Ignore the Naysayers | Keep Pushing Forward

Do not listen to anyone who tells you “You shouldn’t do it.” I have other words in mind but won’t post them here…you can fill in the “rests” in the sentence. Nobody is better or worse…just different. Listeners and fans each like something different. If being “perfect” was all that mattered, many musicians would still be in the garage or their parents’ basement. If you think what they said is legitimate criticism, work on fixing that part. Whatever you do, just keep practicing and doing what you love. My motto is “1 percent better every day.”

Encouragement and Cheerleading

Here’s some more encouragement and cheerleading for you. If I listened to all the people who told me: “you can’t sing,” “so-and-so is better,” “I don’t like your voice,” “girls can’t sing metal,” “I don’t like female singers,” “I don’t think of you as a singer at all; I’m the singer,” “I didn’t know you could sing like that,” too much or not enough vibrato, voice too high or low, too clean or raspy, accent too “southern,” too smart, too ignorant, too [fat, thin, muscular, not muscular enough], backside too big, backside too small, too short, too tall, bust too big, bust too small, not pretty enough, too pretty, hair too (blonde, red, black), hair too long or short, teeth not good enough and too yellow, teeth too good and too white, too…”] you would never have seen me onstage.

If I let all the times someone refused to let me sing at an open mic night (I was the only female) stop me, I would have quit singing long ago. Don’t even get me started on some of the ridiculous tactics some people have tried. It’s appalling what people think is okay to say or do when one goes onstage to entertain.

 

Tune in to the Terrific

You get the point. Don’t listen to them. Ignore the other musicians and arm-folders who will inevitably speak ill of you behind your back. Also, remember that only a few do that, not all of us. Keep doing what you do! Next time you see someone folding their arms, turn that negativity into success fuel by thinking something like, “Gosh, that troll must be chilly. Maybe they need a coat.”

Who’s worse: the haters or the plagiarizers and copycats? Watch for folks to rewrite what I wrote and pass it off as their own work and ideas…again. Yep, I noticed every time. Just didn’t say anything because others noticed it, too, and they know you plagiarized, too. Stop being the moon and try being the sun for a change. You may be surprised at what you can do on your own.
