A Journey Since 1993

Since 1993, I’ve been part of this elite community, silently pursuing intellectual excellence behind the scenes. Now, it’s time to celebrate and share this accomplishment with you.

For those who aren’t familiar with the organization, Mensa is an unusual group. It is an international high-IQ society with approximately 150,000 members in 90+ countries worldwide. Of these 150,000 members, the American Mensa group currently has approximately 50,000 members. The requirement for membership is an IQ score in the top 2% of individuals on a verified intellectual aptitude test.

I never knew about the organization until someone told me about it just before I began my first year at university. At the time, it seemed an unlikely group for a girl from the wilderness and mountains of rural West Virginia. However, there’s a place in Mensa for everyone from everywhere. You just have to find yours.

A Journey of Wit and Wisdom

Embark on a journey with me as I recount the whimsical tale of how I earned my Mensa digital badge. It is a badge that symbolizes not just intellect, but also a touch of humor and irony.

It all started innocently enough when I decided to adorn my car with a Mensa plate frame many years ago. Little did I know, this innocent accessory reminder of a private language joke would lead to many delightful conversations and linguistic discovery. In Latin, Mensa translates to “table,” evoking images of great minds gathering for stimulating conversations. However, in Spanish, it takes on a different meaning altogether. “Menso” means “silly,” and “mensa” is the feminine form of the word. Therefore, it humorously takes on the meaning of “sillyfemale.”

Helpful people tried to warn me of the meaning in Spanish, but I was highly entertained by it. Reminded me of the car brand language fun with Volvo and Nova. In Latin, Volvo translates to “I roll.” Humorous for a car that is legendary for its safety. Nova means “star” in Latin, but in Spanish, it can be heard as “no va,” which means, “it doesn’t go.”

The juxtaposition of these meanings never fails to bring a smile to my face. It’s a reminder that intelligence and humor often go hand in hand, and that sometimes, the best discoveries are made in the most unexpected places. Shared laughter is the best kind. So, join me as I proudly display my Mensa digital badge, a testament to intellect, humor, and the joy of linguistic quirks.

In the world of cybersecurity, I pioneered correlating human behavior to computer systems, creating the Ports and Services Model of Social Engineering. I termed it “Hacking Humans.” This was a model to help cyberguardians explore human vulnerabilities and emotions for prevention of data compromise and other security breaches. It was later adopted by the biohacking community.
