My Literary Odyssey | From Childhood Wonders to Modern Insights

When I was a child, my father worked on the docks at the Smucker’s jelly factory warehouse. He loaded crates of jelly while he was still in the military. Money was tight, but he was determined to provide me with a good education. To that end, he invested in a set of encyclopedias and science books when I was just three years old. I was captivated by the pictures and would spend hours exploring them. My natural inclination to care for things meant I never tore pages or wrote in books. Instead of destroying the books, I eagerly asked my mom to teach me how to read. She obliged and also took me to the public library frequently during the summer months.

By kindergarten, I could already read a little, and my fascination grew. I devoured books from the school library. I started with horse stories like Black Beauty and then moving through philosophy, religion, science fiction, fantasy, and history. Each book was a gateway to understanding different perspectives and cultures. They broadened my view of the world beyond the mountains of West Virginia where I grew up.

 

Futuristic Fiction and Comic Relief | Unveiling Sci-Fi and Comic Book Treasures

In addition to my reading, reruns of the original Star Trek series had a profound impact on me. With only two TV channels available in our rural area, Star Trek offered a glimpse into futuristic ideas and diverse worlds that fueled my imagination. On a trip to the beach, I discovered comic books at a rest stop. My first was a Conan the Barbarian comic. This discovery led me to explore Spider-Man, The X-Men, Batman, and The House of Mystery, further expanding my love for storytelling and adventure.

By the eighth grade, I had read most of the classics. I had also read many texts that would later be assigned in college. This early exposure to diverse ideas and narratives shaped my love for learning and my desire to share this joy with others. My reading and literary journey insights have been about more than just accumulating knowledge. It’s been about connecting with the richness of human experience and sharing that enthusiasm with the world.

As I look back on the books that have shaped my thinking, I realize this list is just a small sampling of the many powerful works I’ve encountered over the years. I’m sure there are countless other important titles I have yet to explore, but these stand out as particularly impactful.

I read most of these books during my formative years in elementary school, junior high, and high school. Back then, there were no lists of recommended reads or influencers telling me what I should pick up. I found these on my own, and each one was riveting, impossible to put down.

Through these works, I began to understand the world around me, delving into history, exploring different perspectives, and grasping the complexities of human nature. Each book was a portal, offering a new lens through which to view the world. And with every page, I grew, not just in knowledge, but in understanding, empathy, and vision.

Two of my favorite works from this period, A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess and 1984 by George Orwell, profoundly impacted me even as they terrified me. These stories provided a stark glimpse into the possible consequences of imposing control on individuals and societies with ostensibly good intentions.

 

Formative Reads and Views | How A Clockwork Orange and 1984 Shaped My Worldview

Discovering A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess and 1984 by George Orwell at around 11 years old profoundly impacted my worldview. The intense and provocative themes of these books sparked deep reflections on authoritarianism, morality, and personal freedom.

 

The Power of Language and Ethics

My all-time favorite book is A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess. What captivates me most is Burgess’s extraordinary creativity and linguistic prowess. He masterfully created an entire slang language. With it, he extrapolated what future dialects might look like, blending elements from various languages and regional dialects.

 

Conscious Choice | Choosing Good Over Evil

The genius of Burgess lies not only in his linguistic innovation, creating a unique slang that blends Russian, Cockney, and Romani dialects to craft the language of “Nadsat.” It is also evident in his exploration of themes that often get lost in translation. One example is Stanley Kubrick’s visually impactful cinematic adaptation. While Kubrick’s film is iconic in its own right, it often emphasizes the violence and dystopian aspects of the story. Unfortunately, these overshadowed the complex moral and philosophical questions Burgess poses about free will, redemption, and the human capacity for evil.

In A Clockwork Orange, Anthony Burgess explores the disturbing parallels between state-sponsored conditioning and the erosion of individual freedom. The novel’s depiction of Alex’s coerced transformation into a compliant citizen mirrors contemporary concerns about modern “reeducation” camps. These institutions often employ similar tactics of psychological manipulation to enforce ideological conformity. This raises critical questions about autonomy and the ethical limits of state intervention. The chilling resonance between Burgess’s dystopian vision and current practices underscores the ongoing debate over the balance between societal control and personal freedom.

In the novel, Burgess delves into the essence of what it means to be truly human. He uses the age-old conundrum of the human ability to choose between good and evil. The government’s attempt to condition the protagonist, Alex, into “goodness” by stripping him of his free will is presented as a greater evil than Alex’s initial crimes. The portrayal of a society stripped of privacy and truth was deeply unsettling, evoking nightmares and highlighting the dangers of authoritarianism. The book resonates with me for similar reasons as A Clockwork Orange. Both books explore the theme of control, whether through the brute force of Orwell’s dystopian regime or the psychological manipulation in Burgess’s world. Yet, A Clockwork Orange brings a unique perspective with its rich, disturbing, and ultimately humanistic portrayal of the battle between individual autonomy and societal control. Burgess’s work, with its vibrant language and deeper philosophical layers, continues to challenge and inspire me, reminding me of the complexity of the human condition and its intersection with technology.

 

Orwell’s Timeless Vision | Predicting a Future Unfolded

George Orwell’s 1984 was written in 1949, making its title prophetic by 40 years. Had it been named 2024, it would have captured today’s realities even more precisely. In reality, Orwell was 75 years ahead of his time. The book’s depiction of propaganda, misinformation, digital control, and pervasive surveillance resonates strongly today. It reflects a reality where privacy is continually compromised by our electronics and vehicles. It’s as if Orwell foresaw a world where constant digital oversight and manipulation have become the norm, capturing the essence of our current technological landscape.

 

People Will Suprise Us

Without the freedom to choose to do good, humans become no more than automatons or slaves. Given the freedom to choose, most people choose to do good. If we didn’t, then we wouldn’t have made it this far as a species because we would never have been able to cooperate in order to survive. Yes, there are lurid exceptions, but most of us are more alike than we care to admit.

 

The Discovery of Metropolis

At 18, I discovered Fritz Lang’s Metropolis. The film’s groundbreaking visuals and its themes of class struggle and industrialization echoed the concerns of A Clockwork Orange and 1984. Metropolis’ exploration of dystopian futures further enriched my understanding of societal control and technological impact.

 

Influence of Derivative Films and Music

Later films in the same genre as Metropolis, such as Dark City and The Matrix, continued to explore these themes, reinforcing the philosophical inquiries initiated by Burgess and Orwell. This cinematic evolution deepened my appreciation for the thematic connections between these works.

 

Musical Reflections

Interestingly, these themes also resonated with my musical experiences. At 16, my band and I performed at West Virginia University’s battle of the bands, featuring Rush’s Red Barchetta. The song’s narrative of a dystopian future where personal freedom is suppressed aligned closely with the themes of A Clockwork Orange 1984. Serendipitously, this song was selected by our guitarist. Every time I encountered these movies, I couldn’t help but think of how Red Barchetta, or even Rush’s song Freewill or side A of the album 2112, could serve as an anthem for the themes explored in these works.

These literary and cinematic experiences profoundly influenced my understanding of humanity, ethics, and societal structures. Despite the fear and discomfort they evoked, these works became cornerstones of my intellectual and creative journey. They shaped my perspectives on both personal and societal levels.
