CHARLES SCHWAB (contract), Phoenix, AZ (July 2003 – December 2004)

Originally brought on to support a large-scale Windows NT to XP migration, Hunter Storm quickly recognized opportunities to optimize both technical execution and team coordination for this multinational financial services company, stockbroker, and bank.

  • Without altering existing leadership structures, she reorganized operational workflows to reduce user-impact issues by 86%, eliminating nearly all client-facing complaints.
  • Trusted to make high-risk decisions, secure sensitive systems, and assume tactical control when needed – all while preserving the momentum of an already well-run operation.
  • Authored key documentation still in use on the internal Schwab documentation network. Left the environment stable, scalable, and quietly improved.

Enterprise Migration Lead (Contract), Charles Schwab

Phoenix, AZ 2002 – 2003
Brought on as a contractor for a Windows NT domains to Active Directory migration, as well as Windows NT to Windows XP Workstations and hardware refresh. Ended up architecting and leading one of the most complex enterprise migrations in Schwab’s history, touching every environment and user.

Functional Titles include but are not limited to Lead Field Engineer, Systems Architect, Project Manager.

  • Led full-scale migration of 16,000+ (final total closer to 25,000) user accounts across Charles Schwab’s entire enterprise network, personally executing and overseeing all phases.
  • Assumed de facto leadership of project and team operations without formal authority – recognized for exceptional performance and trusted implicitly by teams from top to bottom.
  • Created enduring technical documentation still referenced on the internal enterprise knowledge base years later.
  • Operated with high-trust access:
    • held enterprise administrator access, as well as keys to multiple secure facilities (including vault-level data centers and staging labs)
    • conducted sensitive hardware handling with no paperwork required due to trusted status.
    • Authorized badge access for internal staff, contractors, and vendors – an unusual level of trust and autonomy rarely granted at Schwab – based upon project needs and my discretion. Supervised or approved unsupervised access as required.
  • Known for fearless execution – called upon to make critical changes others avoided due to risk, including one incident a teammate referred to as a “Hunter trickety trick” that solved a major issue others refused to touch.
  • Proactively intervened in a cybersecurity escalation involving a Code Red infection; physically secured compromised servers from executive offices with the support of physical security.
  • Nickname earned on-site as a result of Code Red intervention: “The Computer Nazi” (term of endearment from the Director of Physical Security), reflecting Hunter’s no-nonsense efficiency, absolute reliability, and enterprise-level command presence.

Like most of Hunter Storm’s roles, this was a cross-domain, cross-functional hybrid role that involved operating simultaneously in multiple parts of the enterprise. She managed teams of onsite technicians while providing 3rd level global issue resolution and leadership to teams of vendors and internal systems administrators nationwide for 16,000+ user Active Directory / Windows XP migration and hardware refresh. Administered Active Directory (AD), Windows 2003, 2000, NT 4.0 and Exchange servers; as well as Windows XP and NT 4.0 workstations using ADUC, Marimba Admin Tuner, Remote Desktop, Citrix, DameWare, and Timbuktu. Worked closely with Active Directory architects, Windows security, developers, software distribution, access management, and hardware planning to streamline deployment processes and implement technologies.

  • Discovered root causes of multiple technical issues and initiated global resolutions, including single sign on, biometric authentication, network, and virus issues.
  • Consulted with business units and project management team to determine their requirements and technical needs, including NT and AD group memberships, account creation, drive mappings, login scripts, DFS links, Marimba subscription groups, one-off applications, and scheduling.
  • Originated multiple automated tools and scripts to resolve issues with migrations. Gave specifications to developers, worked with them to QA test tools, implemented tools in our environment, and then provided documentation so that others could replicate results.
  • Became escalation point for other lead engineers on team and within the global enterprise.
  • Trained engineers to use features of ADUC, Marimba Client Tuner, and custom migration tools.
  • Mentored her onsite team of systems administrators to replace / backfill her by teaching them all tools and troubleshooting tricks.
  • Wrote all migration technical documentation for systems administrators and end users. Published documentation on corporate Intranet as Subject Matter Expert (SME), where it was still available decades later.
  • Reduced number of tickets in Remedy queue approximately 86% by devising new processes to meet and exceed project timelines while simultaneously cutting rollout time and reducing errors.
  • Responsible for approximately $4.5 million in new project hardware; created and maintained inventory tracking spreadsheet for contractors to update. Worked with hardware planning department to securely wipe and disinvest all end-of-lifecycle hardware.
  • Procured secured storage and set up imaging labs in 3 separate Phoenix locations, including controlled badge access, high-speed network, switches, and racking.
  • Received Charles Schwab EIS (Excellence in Service) Award as part of XP Migration Team.

Key Contributions | Accomplishments

The following are some of Hunter Storm’s key technical and architectural contributions to the Charles Schwab XP Migration Project. Note that in each case, she created documentation and disseminated to the enterprise teams, as well as to any affected third-party vendor with a business need to know.

Technical Issues Discovered/Resolved

  • Malware Remediation: Discovered and led remediation of a sophisticated malware infection that had evaded the company’s antivirus detection for over six months, preventing potential breaches and operational disruptions.
