This article explains why AI systems cannot technically prevent this class of data exposure, why Data Loss Prevention (DLP) does not solve it, and why human behavior—not artificial intelligence—is the primary threat vector.

This is not a one‑off failure.

It is happening everywhere —across government, Fortune 500 companies, law firms, hospitals, and startups—quietly, constantly, and mostly undetected.

 


The Incident Is a Symptom, Not the Disease

The specifics matter less than the pattern:

  • A human with legitimate access
  • A sensitive document (not classified, but operationally important)
  • A public or semi‑public AI system
  • A belief that “this is probably fine”

 

That combination exists in every organization on earth right now.

The only reason this particular case surfaced is because:

  • The organization, Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), had exceptionally strong internal monitoring
  • The user was senior enough to generate visibility
  • The environment was already under scrutiny

 

Most organizations have none of those advantages.

 


Why “Just Block It” Is a Fantasy

Let’s dismantle the most common misconceptions.

“AI Systems Should Refuse Sensitive Documents”

They can’t—at least not in the way people think.

To determine whether a document is sensitive, an AI system must:

  1. Receive the data
  2. Parse the data
  3. Understand the data

 

At that point, the data has already been ingested.

This is not a moral failing. It’s a physics problem.

 

The Human Equivalent | Bad Food

You don’t know food is bad until:

  • You taste it
  • Or it makes you sick

  • Sensitive negotiations are summarized
  • Internal strategies are rewritten
  • Regulated data is casually transformed

  • “AI risk”

Here is the part most vendors and even tech people won’t say out loud:

There is no technical control that can fully prevent a trusted insider from putting sensitive information into an AI system.

 

Not firewalls.
Not DLP.
Not AI content filters.
Not “secure AI gateways.”

You can reduce risk.
You cannot eliminate it.

And pretending otherwise is itself a security failure.

 


What Actually Works (Actionable Steps)

 

Redefine AI as Data Egress

Treat AI systems—public and internal —as:

  • External disclosure points
  • Not productivity tools

 

If it would be inappropriate to email externally, it is inappropriate for AI.

  • Organizations currently have zero technical visibility over the majority of AI interactions.

 

The failure here is entirely human: poor hiring decisions, misplaced trust, and overconfidence in convenience. And yes—I know exactly what I’d have done if given the same access. And no, I would not have needed an “exception policy” to behave correctly.
